PHYS. ,,Thermomètre différentiel de construction très simple`` (Méd. Biol. t. 3 1972). Des corps obscurs, exposés pendant un certain temps aux rayons solaires ou aux émanations d'un corps incandescent, agissent aussi sur le thermoscope (COURNOT, Fond. connaiss., 1851, p. 138).
Prononc.:[]. Étymol. et Hist. 1. 1721 « thermomètre » (Trév.); 2. 1806 « thermomètre à air, servant à étudier les différences de température entre deux milieux » (CAPURON, Nouv. dict. de méd.). Formé des élém. formants thermo- et de -scope. La forme lat. thermoscopium figure dans un ouvrage de Gius. Bianconi écrit en 1617. Thermoscope est att. en angl. dès 1656 (NED).
